Summer Tour Entry #21: Visit Toronto! Watch party-girls fall down!

Summer Tour Entry #21: Visit Toronto! Watch party-girls fall down!

Thursday, August 27th/09, Rancho Relaxo, Toronto ONT I like being a tourist. Not really in the classic definition of the title, like the maps, the cameras and brochures of sights and hotspots, souvenirs from gift shops, tourism reliant restaurants and cafes. But I like being a visitor, blending in, spying on things, adventuring, knowing that I will not be here forever, not permanent. I like ending up in strange places, stuff that I want to see, not what is recommended. I take some pictures and video when it is appropriate, kind of my own brand of souvenir, something to remember it by, maybe send a ridiculous postcard to a friend. I seek out restaurants off the beaten path, something good, different than what I can get at home every other

Summer Tour Entry #20: We’re the midnight kids

Wednesday, August 26th/09, Downtown Toronto ONT Nothing interesting happened today. Well, that’s not entirely true, we bothered alot of people. I was pretty overwhelmed by the amount of people in the downtown Toronto area, Eaton Center, the mass collection of bodies, the foot and vehicle traffic, summer still in full effect, competing with special events, restaurants and cafes, clothing sales, all out flyering all corners, like really. It was crazy and it tired me out, made me want to screw the fliers, find a patio somewhere in the sun and have a beverage (as if I could afford it) chill and watch everyone, a favorite activity, shopping and talking, scampering, relentless, directionless, unproductive motion, we all do it. We must have walked around for 3 or 4 hours, handing out

Tuesday, August 25th/09, The Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto ONT Modern rock is a term commonly used to describe a rock music format found on North American commercial radio. Generally beginning with late 70’s punk but referring especially to rock music since the 80’s, the phrase “modern rock” is used to differentiate the music from “classic rock,” which focuses on music recorded in the 1960’s through the early 80’s. More specifically, the modern rock format consists of commercial radio stations that primarily play alternative rock. As such, the format is also frequently called “alternative radio.” Such a thing has become more familiar to me in the last year, listening to a vast collection of new bands and artists that dominate the air, attempting to figure out “the formula,” but mostly approaching slowly

Summer Tour Entry #18: Note to self: family’s important

Monday, August 24th/09, 90 Glenmore Road, Toronto ONT For those who don’t know me, I have two sisters, and I love them very much. Although, I don’t say it to them very often because that’s just the way we were brought up, close-mouthed, naive and hard-working (not on a farm, as probably expected) We just always understood love was there. They took care of me for most of my stupid years, when I was still figuring out how to tie my shoes, whistle, speak and walk properly, and then how to ride a bike and swim and other things they were doing at the time, you know, make fun of you for your purple or green hair and having acne or that time you lost your license, twice, and tell

Summer Tour Entry #17: Scripts and stories

Sunday, August 23rd/09, John’s Basement, Kitchener ONT It is important to be well-rehearsed, to know what comes next, what to expect from yourself, to recognize your capabilities and weaknesses ahead of time. Like most things involving public speaking, entertainment, acting, being a musician, having a plan and a routine is never a bad idea. In this industry, especially, I have found that there is a difference between us bands that bring out 50-100 kids, and the bands that pack out halls and stadiums, and it has mostly to do with stage presence, but not always. Sure you could go up there and sound exactly like your album, have sampled everything, but the real entertainers want you to move and jump and react to everything transpiring on stage, it doesn’t matter

Summer Tour Entry #16: The official Dan Ball Brand stomach-pounder

Saturday, August 22nd/09, Lond Music Hall, London ONT I am relatively healthy, we all are, to some sort of extent, we all have bad habits. I choose to believe that it is really the amount of effort you put into something rather than the success obtained, the glory, the good feeling that comes with accomplishments, especially when it involves your diet on tour. I think all bands must go through this at a certain point, the thought of a beneficial and healthy food budget. But let’s not mess around, there is mostly binging, the lack of commitment following the large amount of energy expelled during a performance, and the immediate response, to go for the finest, cheapest, and not the most nutritious, but replenishing food and beverage combination (available at

Summer Tour Entry #15: Let`s start a riot!

Summer Tour Entry #15: Let`s start a riot!

Friday, August 21st/09, L3 Nightclub, St. Catherines ONT In this industry, it is certainly who you know and the timing of when and where you are, something I’ve realized over time, beating my head against this, trying to make ends meet. Again, an infinite thanks and appreciation goes out from our hearts to the boys in The Artist Life, The Snips and Brights. Not only are they brilliant musicians, but are now some of our great friends and allies, and that is why I am in this for the most part, the networking aspect, and the unspoken love between seemingly random groups of people. It makes these tours a little more comfortable and you feel a little more able to carry on with whatever endeavor you are on. Make sure,

Thursday, August 20th/09, Ottawa/Toronto, ONT Oh, the humidity! We stayed in Fara’s apartment, woke up to a friendly cat and slightly more than energetic weiner dog named Rocky. It was humid out, a little more than what us island boys are used to, a cool breeze, rain for 5 minutes every hour, no matter what season. It was a sauna, and I’m sure Ottawa is used to it this time of year, but we like to complain, it’s a gift. The shower was nice and very much appreciated. We all had a slight grease build up after the past few days, due to the amount of moisture we managed to accumulate just by merely sitting in the van and walking around. Dan explained to me later that the reason it
