Studio Log: Day 1 – Drums

Three years, 50,000 kms, and 100+ shows later… we’re finally back in the studio to record our sophomore album!

It’s been a pretty gloomy spring around Victoria this year, but today mother nature decide to honour our first day in the studio by bringing us the kind of summer weather normally reserved exclusively for TV beer commercials. It’s just a shame that people decided to build recording studios indoors, because today would have been a great day to spend time doing some of the things that inspire songs to be written: like BBQ’ing in the backyard, sipping cold drinks with friends on a downtown patio, or maybe even participating in something called the Good Ol’ Boys Invitational Beer Mile.

We’re excited to be working on this album with our friend Adam “Pop Sensation” Sutherland in his downtown Victoria studio, Infinity Studios. Adam recorded and produced our debut album, “Working”, so he was the obvious choice to help us mold this new batch of songs into an awesome sounding album.

The day started off with Adam and local drumming superstar Johnny Andrews (Rococode, Tegan and Sara) working on getting the perfect drum sounds. From what I can gather so far, the process involves a complicated procedure of randomly turning bolts on the drums and taping chewing gum packages all over the place, so these sorts of operations are best left to the professionals.

After the sounds were perfected it was Lewis’ turn to do what he does best and start smashing things.

It seems to be going well so far. We finished the drums for 3 songs today, so hopefully that means we’ll have all the drums done by Monday night just in time to watch the hockey game. Stay tuned for more updates!
